Soup & Starlight 26/09/09

Once again the weather was perfect for our annual event. Everything went smoothly with plenty of volunteers helping to set-up. As usual the evening started with the judging of the 'Wacky Racers', this was done by Pip's friends Molly and Alan who were on holiday from Birmingham. Molly and Alan were both in agreement that 'Rocket Ron' a.k.a. Harry Thorne should receive the prize for the best 'Device' and Roger (chairman) presented him with his prize.

Without further delay and some fumbling the competitors prepared their 'racers' at the pond side. Bill Toms was 'volunteered' as the 'finish linesman' and Simon was designated as 'starting official' and in an instant the race was under way.

It was a clean getaway by five of the six entries with an early lead made by my 'Davey Jones's Locker' until it encountered some large leaves which scuppered any chance of success, it then swerved off in a large circle to port. John Christophers modified entry from last year 'turbo Carlsberg' (my description) took the lead and headed off towards its target, (no, not Ray's Yamoto as last year).

Suddenly there was an almighty WHOOOOOSH, a great bang, and a shower of coloured sparks. 'Rocket Ron' had a dastardly scheme planned, which was not detected at the judging. The 'beaky snugger' had installed not one, but two small rockets in his craft, NAUGHTY HARRY NOT ECO-FRIENDLY AT ALL! Mind you, the words 'ROCKET RON' on his top hat should have given a clue.

With Rocket Ron's entry blown to pieces that left four other craft, floundering around the pond in various directions other than towards the finish line, while 'turbo Carlsberg' sailed off into the sunset.

Straight as a die, 'turbo Carlsberg' completed the course in no time at all and earned John the prize, well done John.

I would just like to say a VERY BIG THANKYOU to everyone who helped to make the event the success it was.

See you all again next year, and keep those ideas for Wacky Racers coming in, it is your input, which really makes the event a success.

Thank you everyone, your
Webmaster.

Arlington Court Sunday 26th July. '09

Once again we were invited to display our unique collection of radio-controlled boats at Arlington Court. The event was announced as 'Messing about with Boats', had the event gone ahead in the marquee and on the lake, then it would have been aptly named. It would indeed have been a MESS because the weather was apalling, it rained the entire day.

We all arrived at the marquee in pouring rain. After some discussion we agreed not to go ahead with the outside display and the organiser of the event was informed. We were offered an alternative venue which was in a room above the Carriage Museum. This turned out to be very suitable for our needs and we set up our display. There were refreshment facilities on hand and we were made most welcome.

We sat there for half an hour or so talking amongst ourselves waiting for the first visitor to arrive. Much to our amazement they started to come in increasing numbers and at the end of the day we estimated approximately 200 - 250 visitors saw our display. I think we had the Carriage Museum to thank for bringing in the people in such numbers.

Throughout the day we involved the public in voting for the 'Best boat in show, the winner to receive 'The Arlington Shield' for a year. 202 votes were cast and the results were as follows:-

1st place - Keith thompson - Tug - 'Lady Wooes' (boat number 21)

2nd place - Tony Barber - RNLB 'George Gibson' (Appledore) (boat number 1)

3rd place - Derek Bradbeer - Paddlesteamer - 'Glasgow' (boat number 13)

4th place - Roger Palmer - Yacht - 'Moonbeam' (boat number 22)

At the end of the show the 'Arlington Shield' was presented to Keith by Fiona Austin-Byrne who is the house steward of The Carriage Museum. We would like to thank Fiona and all the staff of Arlington House for making us welcome. See you again next year.

Saturday/Sunday 11th/12th July - Weymouth Boat Show.

Sunday 21st June 2009 - Father's Day event at Crealy Park Nr. Exeter

There is absolutely no truth that the webmaster 'accidently' left his table behind. It was deliberately placed there to reserve a site for the next event! That's my explanation.

Anyway, enjoy the pics. and thanks to everyone who attended and helped make Exeter's event the great show it always is.

Our thanks to all the members of the Exeter club for inviting us, we all had a great time.
