One of our favourite venues, a very pleasant lake with plenty of amenities.
As usual we were made very welcome by Dave Aylott and all the Exeter model boat club members to whom we would like to say, a big thank you.
The day started well but by lunch time the rain had started. Fortunately it only lasted for an hour or so and activities resumed as before. Several accidents occurred during the fast electric session as expected, one tried to climb a tree on the island, two overturned and one buried itself in the bank!
Several models lost control for one reason or another, my Tyne class lifeboat notched up another 'rescue' when a model of the Waverley paddle steamer broke down. Another accident was to the high speed motor boat belonging to a member's friend, it developed a rather nasty smoking habit. When brought ashore and the top removed, a pall of yellow/brown smoke came from inside. The speed controller was totally fried, thanks to the owner omitting to put a fuse in the circuit, so take note!
The weather stayed fine long enough for the raffle to finish and everyone packed up just in time before the rain returned. In spite of that I'm sure everyone had a great time, I know I did. We'll be back next year!

The Event.
Yes, it's that time of year again. Once more we have been invited to provide a display of our Models for the visitors at the National Trust Property, Arlington Court.
Members attending last year will remember what an enjoyable day we all had.
This year we will also be running a competition for the 'Best Model in Show'. All models will be eligible for entry; kits, scratch built, scale, near scale, freelance, and yes even DUCKS! Each model will be given a number for ease of identification for the public, who will be invited to vote for the model of their choice.
Property Manager Ana Chylak has very kindly agreed to present the 'Best in Show Shield' to the winner. The winner will of course have his/her name engraved on the shield and will hold the shield for one year.
Question: - How many models do we require?
Remember we have a Marquee to fill a Gazebo at the pond side and of course the pond itself, so please do what you can.
Last year a few members had a problem in maintaining sufficient battery power to keep their models running, so this year, I have arranged for a room containing mains power sockets (13amps), benches, water on tap etc. This room will be available for the sole use of club members, it is a secure room, and the keys will be held by myself and will therefore be available to all members.
As usual I will have passes for all club members and their partners, these need to be presented at reception in order to gain access to Arlington Court, the house, carriage collection and gardens. If you are a National Trust Member please use your membership card at reception, not the passes that I issue.
Attendance Time
Members are able to enter Arlington Court Estate any time after 9 am.
when you will be permitted to drive direct to our display area for unloading, having unloaded, cars must be driven back to the public car park. Any members having the Blue Disabled Badge may of course park in the disabled car park, but please ensure the badge is displayed. All cars must be removed from the display area by 10.30 a.m.
Our event is scheduled to finish at 3 p.m., at which time the presentation of the Arlington Shield will take place. After this event members will be able to collect their cars from the car packs. Whilst driving about the estate please remember that the Horses and Carriage have priority, and also that cars are not permitted to park on any of the grassed areas
Direction to Arlington Court
For club members who have been unable to attend the event in previous years, Tony, our web master has provided a map, giving directions from your home to Arlington Court. On leaving the A39 you will be driving up a slight hill which just bends to the right and then to the left. At this point look to your right for a sign giving directions to the disabled car park. All members please take this route. Having reached the disabled car park drive past the entrance, following the road which swings at first to the left, then to the right. All going well you will now find yourselves at the front of the house and immediately in front of you will be seen the marquee with the club banners flying.

This year the weather was absolutely perfect, very little wind, and warm, what more could you ask for?
Only three entries this year for the Wacky Racers, could have been better but can't grumble, they certainly provided some fun for the onlookers.
The start of the race was temporally interrupted by the unplanned arrival on the course, of an eight foot Japanese battleship! WELL DONE RAY!
John's turbo fan device went off at great pace, albeit in circles, eventually getting its own back on Ray by ramming the battleship amidships which by this time was moored inside the 'harbour'. (Shades of 'Pearl Harbour' in reverse) WELL DONE JOHN!
Roger's amazing technical wizardry put his craft in motion - it looked to me, a bit like a skier in diving boots, trying to lift its self off the water and plopping back down again gaining a bit more water each complete cycle. It finally gave up when one of Roger's knots came loose. The towed raft, which contained the drive battery went adrift and disconnected the power, Opps!
My mowing machine - well, it too decided to go in even bigger circles than John's craft. It slowly completed at least two circuits of the start area of the pond before ramming the side of the pond becoming entangled in a load of weed. After setting it free from the clutches of the dreaded weed it was sent on its way again. To my amazement it did actually complete the course - eventually!
Before the race, the three 'craft' were judged by our newest member Harry and his wife Sheila. They deliberated at some length, and declared Roger's craft the winner, well done Roger.
I would like to thank all who helped and participated in the event and a very big thank you to all the 'Catering Staff', without your voluntary assistance the event would not be possible. THANK YOU.
If there are sufficient entries, the event will be held again next year, if not, well...........
Anyway, have a look at some of the pics and be amazed!
If other members have photos of the event please contact me and I will publish them for you.
